I believe that this is a great step forward in technology. I believe this as it is creating new opertunites for people searching online, and gives them a more acurate idea of historical facts.
There is the problem however of integrity. These writing were written years ago for the news paper and having them printed online with all the other "similar" articles shown means you are being lead to believe they are related when they might not have been intended that way. The way in which the arcitles and pictures were placed would have been intensional and having other articles surounding it or being implied to be related could contribute to the information being miss inturpreted by the reader.

The idea of Google introducing old newspapers, that pre-date the digital age, to the internet will expand the company and have yet another use added to their search engine.
Since Google has partnered up with approximately 100 newspapers, they will have plenty to offer from many regions and the categories will vary which gives consumers a wide range of choice to browse. It will also provide excellent quality such as pages as the original size and print(since they are scanning).
Personally,i think this is a big break through since most people do not have access to older newspapers. This affects the area of accessibility and would be the consumers' 'back in time' option on Google.

It's been said that one person's trash is another person's treasure. The idea of launching old newspapers that pre-date the digital age to the web is very useful. Since some people can use them for multiple purposes: research, scholastic work and so forth. We can gain a lot from old newspapers; since it’ll contain information like any other newspaper, news, advertisement, political events, crime, business, art/entertainment, society and sports; in addition to an editorial page containing columns which express the personal opinions of writers. Recent developments on the Internet are, however, posing major challenges to the business model of many newspapers. Paid circulation is declining in most countries, and advertising revenue, which makes up the bulk of most newspapers’ income, is shifting from print to online, resulting in a general decline in newspaper profits. In other words, people now are more interested in reading the news electronically, rather than a hard copy. This has led to some predictions that newspapers will shrink or even disappear, although new media technologies such as radio and television never supplanted print media.

Day after day Google is making better improvements for the world. Now it is thinking it would digitize old newspapers from the past century and make them available online. It is very useful to see previous information and as Pierre Little, publisher of The Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph said, "many readers visit the newspaper’s Web site to look for obituaries and conduct research on their ancestors". It would be helpful for people to type the name of their ancestors online and find info about them rather than spending weeks looking through old newspapers. It would also help schools, libraries and other institutions look back at historical news. The main ethical issue in this article is a privacy issue. Some newspapers do not want Google to have access to their property and that is why Google said it would take their permission before doing so and that they would also advertize the newspaper's name on theside columns and that is great for a newspaper company to be advertized worldwide.

As Google adds more and more collections of newspapers to their online database, more and more people are able to read the daily paper, with less inconvenience.
The issue involved with this article is intelectual property. By Google increasing the number of different newspapers available online, they create great threats towards the newspaper industries' survivals.
Eventhough most newspaper companies have copyright laws over their newspaper, Google could easily find their way around these laws, and still manage to post the paper online.
As the online papers come for free, at any time of the day and anywhere with an internet connection; the newspaper companies face a huge competition and a very likely drop in the number of sales.
Newspaper companies will slowly start to loose control over their products, which could over the years lead to a decrease in production; and this could have a huge impact on society and certain individuals who perhaps cannot afford an internet connection.

Google expands their web services by deciding to digitize newspaper archives; making millions of old newspaper articles accessible and searchable online. The company has partnered with newspaper publishers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post so that the system can let users to access past articles as they were printed, complete with photographs, headlines, articles and advertisements.
Therefore, the issue addressed in this article is Equality of Access and protection of Intellectual Property. As this service will offer universal access of information, regardless of distance, those who do not have sufficient IT facilities may not be able to benefit from such service. In other words, tele-learning may be beyond the reach of an average person.
The newspaper pages will certainly include writings, pieces of work, discoveries and new ideas which will be made easy for duplication if the archives were digitized. For that reason creators may be discouraged and stop publishing their work due to the lack of universal legal protection of intellectual property.

Scanners have become an important part of the home office over the last few years. Scanner technology is everywhere and used in many ways. The publishing industry would need to use a scanner, which can capture incredibly detailed images so that the newspapers would be as clear as possible to look at. The issue is integrity because Google may classify the article from an old newspaper to be related to a similiar article, which may not always be the case so therefore people may misinterpret the information from the articles. A solution to this problem is that Google should make it clear that the articles surrounding the selected article may not be related in any way. I think it is a good idea that old newspapers are being published on the internet so that there is a huge reference bank to refer to. People got used to reading lots of things online so referring to old newspapers online would not be a huge change.

I think Google's new program of digitizing their newspaper archives is a great idea. Not only does it benefit readers by allowing them to have access to articles which may have been difficult to recover, but increases popularity and usage of both Google and the newspaper companies which want to join the program; it also states that these companies will be given the chance to earn money from their content which is being made accessible. Yet there are many companies which have already done this but what makes Google's idea different is that people will know exactly where to go if they want to pull up old articles and it will be user friendly. The impact on society relating to this new program is that firstly, it will produce a way for people to explore their past, as mentioned by The Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph. The second being that newspaper companies included in the program will be able to increase their sales, which is particularily positive if the company does not release as many articles today as they used to.

Digitizing newspaper articles is a great step forward Google and the newspapers. The ethical issue it covers is Globalization and cultural diversity. 20 years ago a person in Sudan would not know what is happening in Nepal. Whereas now with the technology today a person in the far east can know what is happening at the far west. With technology expanding by the day, and with digitizing newspapers the boundaries that limit us to the others understanding will sees to exist. People are getting more and more united and now an American can read an article from two months earlier which he couldn't read at the time because he was out of the country.

Jassim Al-Thani said...

This is an amazing idea by Google. Digitizing Newspapers will be very easy and useful for people who want to read papers everytime. it will also be of benefit for historians who will find that this program will help them find various articles from the past to help them with their research. It will also benefit people who are always travelling to get up to date news through reading the newspapers of their country online and not miss a thing.
The main ethical issue in this article is a privacy because not all newspapers worldwide want Google to put their papers online for people to access and would prefer people to buy the hard copies.

Rasha said...

This is a great way to show that technology is expanding.
The ethical issue that is involved in this article is integrety. By having old newspapers put online would mean that they could have been altered. This can have a great impact on society because now people can access things online that they could have never accessed before, however if they have been changed it could be a problem because things can be shown in a different or written in a different way. Another impact on society is that researchers would really use this information, because this could be considered as primary research.

The idea of bringing old newspapers that pre-date the digital age to the web that has been launched by the search giant Google is very beneficial for the society in many different ways. Firstly, this technology is environmental friendly. It decreases the need of printing newspapers on actual paper which will decrease the amounts of trees cut down. Secondly, it can also benefit historical researchers when they want to access primary sources as well as students who will need to use these for scholastic purposes. The impact this technology has on society is that people will now feel more connected culturally connected with their ancestors.
Overall, this idea is very intelligent and will be succesful once carried out.

I personally think that this is a great idea because as I am currently taking history higher in my IB diploma program, this tool cab help us alot in analyzing documents which date back to the 1940s. This way historians will be able to evaluate on the event and look closely on how a particular event actually occured and the perspectives of the population during the time. Also, this could be another way to save endangered trees that are being cutdown for papers in order to publish newspapers. This could be a major environmental friendly project for google if it even include current newspapers online.

As Google keeps on improving, more and more people are reading the daily newspaper using the internet. The idea of putting the old newspapers in the internet is very useful. It helps you for research or if you read something and you want to see it again, but if it was in a newspaper you read it once then you might not see it again. Therefore you just open the internet and you will find it all there. Some newspapers don't want google to enter there privacy, so whenever they want to put the information they have to ask them first. Now a days people prefer reading the news from the internet and not from a hard copy of the newspaper.

It is impressive how google managed to partner up with about 100 newspapers companies to make the archives availiable online from lots of different regions and accessible anywhere instead of going to certain places. This technology is useful for anyone who wants to browse old newspaper. However, it would be really useful if google also set up a daily newspaper coming from important newspaper companies like New York Times.

I think it a really good idea and that shows how technology is improving and becoming more advanced.I believe that its a good idea of course it would have some disadvantages and advantages. Its a really good and resourceful for people to use either in schools, University and more. Refereeing to newspapers online would be a really good idea as it not wasting paper. It a really good way to evaluate resources easily. Overall,it going to be a really new to the people and i think people would be really helpful and make it more professional i guess.

its a very great idea by google to digitize the newspapers, because it allows more people to have access to them from around the world and get up dated with the latest news. it will also help historians doing research to look at past publications on certain issues. In general this would be a benefit to people!

this is a great idea from google and will encourage more people to make google their favorite search engine and web browser. this will allow research for people to become accessible and easy like never before. the fact that google is using famous an wll known newspaers to extract th archives from the resources and information will accurate and reliable. alos because google has many partners of about 100 newspapers from different and various regions will give the oppurtunity of a wider range of information. the quality of the archives will also be in good shape as they have not altered their and are merely scans. this is another revolutionary step forward for google.

It is very important for Google to respect the copy right laws. Since it is scanning their newspapers it is obvious that there must be an agreement signed of some sort. The ambiguity of computers had a great affect on papers and books. These days’ people are able to read book from the internet. However there is a high risk of copyright with these electronic copies. These text are more prone to copyright and illegal downloading.

Google is branching into a new form of content which is something new to them because of the unfamiliar content.
It's really helpful for people when they're searching for a specific article and can't get to the original newspaper.
This is something new and huge.
If there was an article about a huge event that was happening, its useful for people to know whatelse was happening on that day or to see it also from different perspectives.
The best thing is that it will help us find an even greater range of material from newspapers large and small.
by having online generations of contributions from different journalists as well as widen readership it will benefit everyone.

Google is creating great opportunities for researchers by digitizing newspaper archives. By doing so, they are widening the reader base for newspaper archives. Google has partnered with over 100 newspapers all over the world, there will be a lot to offer for people worldwide, instead of just focusing it in one region. However, some newspaper companies have already began digitizing their articles, the only difference with Google is that you will know exactly where to go if you want to search for certain articles.
This will benefit the public in various ways, from students to researchers etc. Instead of having to go to libraries, it's as simple as sitting down and using your laptop. It will be a great thing to be able to "tap into 100+ years into history."
The only problem that appears to be present is intellectual property. Because of the increase of newspapers which will be available online, this will create threats to newspaper sales/survival.

I think that digitalizing the newspapers is a great idea because a lot of people will benefit from this; google will of course increase in popularity since a lot of people are interested in history. The fact that old newspapers are provided online will give historians a better way to investigate and use the old sources to have various or different perspectives of the event. I think digitizing the newspapers address the issue of globalization since people all around the world will start to use these sources.

Google's decision to include newspapers from long before the age of digitalization through scanning methods is a great achievement and brings the industry a step forward in their development of modern research. Such an act will further aid users in finding their desired information by adding more primary sources into the net. However, this does create a threat to the integrity of the information. Since google will present 'related' information alongside the key findings, it will be impossible to determine whether or not the information is relevant or related at all. THis is due to the nature of the source and the user would have to take into consideration the time and place at which it was written - and therefore could possibly not have any relevance with what they are after, at all. In order to avoid such problems from taking place, Google should provide a statement cautioning that the information may not be related to the users findings.

This is a major breakthrough for newspaper companies and for google. By making old newspapers available online people will be able to get a better understanding of the past, and a more indepth look at major past events. Not only could you see what was happening on that date but you could also see how advirtisments have changed over the years. This seems to be a very inovating idea that many people may be extremely interested in. Though there may be some problems with this because if newspapers start to get more viewers online then buying their acutal paper versions of the newspaper. this could cause these newspaper companies to over time lose money and lose costumers.

I strongly believe that this will be a very good idea because it is one more step toward ease of access. This new idea is going to be useful to many people because nowadays everything is done on PC's and that means that everything is digitalized, so having to do a project for school for instance, will be much easier since the students will have the ability to just take the article from the news paper and paste it onto their documents. Besides this way the community can keep their records of newspapers without taking out physical space. This creates a huge opportunity for many people and it will be great for newspaper companies to agree on that.
Thankfully there are more positive things about it than negative, and the article clearly shows that.

Introducing historical newspaper into the internet is a wonderful and accessible idea that will contribute to a lot of factors, like research on historical facts. It not is just a good idea but it is very accessible since the person only needs an internet connection on a PC.
Old news papers are extremely hard to find and by introducing to such a popular research tool, GOOGLE, it will be a breakthrough in search engine industry.
The technology that will be used is actually quiet simple and it is where these companies gather the articles and puting them as a archive on the internet, but the problem is that there is a lot of new papers since 1764 and it will take a lot of time to put them all on the internet.

In this day and time, people search for the shortest and most convenient way to get what they're looking for. By "scanning microfilm from some newspapers’ historic archives," they are giving the public an easy access to old archives that would usually take hours or days to find. By also adding recent newspapers such as the "The New York Times, The Washington Post" will help the majority in society. Yet Paid circulation is declining in most countries, and advertising revenue, which makes up the bulk of most newspapers’ income, is shifting from print to online, resulting in a general decline in newspaper profits. People now are more interested in reading the news electronically, rather than a hard copy. Predications have indicated that with these rapid advances in technology. Reading online is very usual for the majority of laptops/computer users therefore this new instalatiion by google wont be a big difference for their targeted market. And with experiance from previous programs that google uploaded its a reliable source that has a loyal group of constant users.
As for the cultural issue this allows diversity and easy access to different cultures, by bringing this cultural connection back to society paople can have a deeper connection to their culture and society.

Google has decided to digitalize newspaper: people will be able to view newspapers as they are printed online. Many newspapers, such as the New York Times, have online services in which people are able to read articles published in their newspaper but not in the same format as a printed version.

This article addresses the issue of equality of access as many people in the world do not have access to the internet and would not be able to benefit from Google's services. By digitalizing newspapers Google is only attracting a small part of the world. This article also addresses the idea of intellectual property. Digitalizing newspapers makes the plagiarism of people's thoughts and ideas easy and people may feel reluctant to publish information in newspapers in the future. After 50 years the writers will no longer own their own work and it becomes part of the public domain. Google needs to obtain the rights to publish the newspapers online, failure to do so could result in law suits.

Khaled Mahmoud said...

Google is continuously enhancing the size of their online database, which is available to everyone, that includes collections of newspapers. In this way, people all over the globe that have access to the Internet are able to read their daily newspapers online, at their own personal comfort.

The issue related with this article is intelectual property; as Google strengthens their newspaper database and as it become more popular, they are jeprodisring the newspaper companies' existence, as they make them less popular and powerful. This will lead to a tremendous drop in hardcopy sales of newspapers as people would only be using the online version. Copyright laws do exist concerning this issue in general, but not this specific one and not to this extent.

A good solution for this would to charge access to these newspapers, for instance, a monthly charge. So instead of paying the paperboy a check every week, people can pay Google with their credit cards, and they can wake up with the newspaper on their desktop.

This can have a big impact on society, particularly for people who still don't have access to the Internet, which at the moment, is a surprisingly big number.

By adding old articles into an archive in Google would be every benificial not only to the company but it woould create many oppurtunities for people in a research aspect. Having old newspapers online would be an innovative piece of technology, it would provide a lot of information especially from the past, which is probably not as easily accessed as it would be now. The historical information would also be more reliable than most other information found on the internet, simply because it was written at the time of the event. The topic this article addresses would be acessibility, this revelation would allow people from all over the world to have access to old newspapers.
