The following article shows how Facebook and social networking sites and the Internet can greatly influence our society. We cannot stop people from speaking our their thought since we all have the freedom of speech and media. Cutting people to talk will cause more controversy among the society. Privacy issues may arise in behalf of the people in the pictures..Globalization is also one issue...
In the web we are able to find many social networking sites that allow us to build online communities with people of the same interest, in this article they talk about protesters who used Facebook as their venue, for an Anti-Israeli demonstration in Egypt. Facebook is one of the most visited website, in Egypt alone there are about 800,000 members. They used Facebook to create Gaza related "groups". This article showed us how more and more people are using the web to voice out their opinions on different subjects, for political reasons and other reasons, that can influence and shape our society.
Facebook, as most people already know, plays a huge role in our everyday lives. It has become a daily routine. Facebook is one of the most popular social sites on the Internet. One uses Facebook for munerous reasons such as commucating with others, joining groups, meeting new people, and so many more as stated in the article. Not only does Facebook allow poeple to commucate but since it is such a huge network and since it holds about 100 million members, it is a source of news. One can log in to Facebook and know what it happening in the world today. Not only does it fill one in on the current situation, but it allows people to express their feelings towards such situations but joining groups regarding them, and supporting them in numerous ways. Another reason people are so drawn to Facebook is because of the privacy settings. Not anyone can enter one's profile unless they are on the friend's list. Even though someone is on the friends list, there are privacy settings there.
While social networks help keep in touch with old acquaintances and are in everyday common usage there are several draw backs to them. Facebook groups created give people the freedom of though and expression and for people in Egypt and other such places this is their only way to share their feelings. Perhaps, this is why some governments ban facebook from their internet facilities. The issue of globalization is addressed through this article.
Facebook like many other social networks allow members to freely express their thoughts and their views on virtually anything. Due to its easy format and accesses to features, these thoughts can be spread like wild fire. As the internet is used more often many people will come across these social networks and join them. As mentioned on the article the youth of Egypt use facebook as their venue, this may be a better way to spread out there thoughts since it it is not just isolated to one area it is on the internet thus allowing their ideas to influence everyone around the world.
It is nice to know that technology can now help people raise their voices. It is giving individuals the right of freedom of speech and exression. This is a positive outcome of technology and it should be appreciated. Through technology and networks like facebook individual people can come up and say what they want to say. They are granted their fundamental rights. This article shows globalization and cultural diversity as people are able to share their points of view with others by the means of technology. It also shows the aspect of people and machines and that involves people using technology positively; that would mean that in this case they are able to raise their voices. It is a very positive acheivement!
Facebook, becoming the third most visited website in such a country with huge population like Egypt, shows that it dominates all the other social networking websites. As the article says, facebook allowed the youth of egypt to share their ideas and thoughts about anything they want, even criticizing the government and organizing rebels and protests, this shows how the internet is deeply involved in all aspects of society.
Since the creation of facebook in 2004, it has grown to become on of the top social networks. It has also been used to support causes and other events with its ability to create groups. This brings up the issue of policies regarding inappropriate things. What is appropriate to be shown on social networks? This shows that social networking may have overstepped its boundaries.
The essay is about comparing ones understanding by using either his/her experience and cultural knowledge, and/or employing objective knowledge meaning personal thoughts to understand the object on hand.
To analyze the above comparison, it is first needed to discuss the applications of some of the significant words used in the title. One needs to know exactly what is meant by phrases such as using your own experience, cultural understanding, or objective knowledge. It is only then that it becomes possible to answer the question on whether or not "objective knowledge is affective enough to improve ones better understanding of any given subject."
Experience: as a general concept comprises knowledge of or skill in or observation of some thing or some event gained through involvement in or exposure to that thing or event. The history of the word experience aligns it closely with the concept of experiment. The concept of experience generally refers to know- how or procedural knowledge rather than propositional knowledge Philosophers dub knowledge based on experience "empirical knowledge" or "a posteriori knowledge". Implying the logic of life's experiences.
The above definition "assuming acceptable" does convey the fact that experience is a tool used for easier acceptance, but not necessarily more affective understanding of a subject, for which extra thought would be essential. On the same token culture means we are raised to think in a certain way, and it is therefore not easy for anyone to accept changes suggested by the very few minority. Let us further examine why most people choose to be content with using their experiences only. This is clearly because their belief in a phrase that says "why does one have to re-envent the wheel again." They are happy to know that their experience shall provide them with an expected outcome. They do not have to think or go through the trouble of creating changes. Most of these people are either extremely narrow minded, benefit from a very low level of education and may even suffer from a very poor upbringing. Let us not forget that the word experience itself is relative to how much or even how far. One should not conclude that if a person has been working for an establishment for say twenty years that it means such person is with twenty years experience within such establishment. It may actually mean that the person has only one year of experience and repeated it for twenty years. Therefore experience without thought is practically a level not much higher than an animal behavior. one could find the regular path for a daily routine of a donkey and it becomes of no surprise to see that after a short time the animal is in no further need of anyone showing it the direction of which way to go.
Let us now study the meaning of the culture, which states Culture: generally refers to patterns of human activity and the symbolic structures that give these activities significance and importance.. Cultures can be "understood as systems of symbols and meanings that even their creators contest, that lack fixed boundaries, that are constantly in flux, and that interact and compete with one another" Culture can be defined as all the ways of life including arts, belief and institutions of a population that are passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been called "the way of life for an entire society. As such, it includes codes of manners, dress, language, religion, rituals, games, standard behavior such as law and morality, and systems of belief as well as the art.
From the above definition one can see the advantages and disadvantages of culture. amongst the advantages, it is easy to claim that a culture will provide you with your identity, religion and customs as well as making it easy for you to communicate with your people at ease, and learn to behave at an acceptable manner within your society. So it is possible for you to understand what they say and why they say if only you know where they're coming from, even so amongst these are disadvantages it is easy to see that behaving differently within a cultural society (society dominated by culture), requires an extra courage which is not a quality that is possible for everyone to benefit from. Let us examine that case of covering a woman's hair in Saudi Arabia. How easy would it be for even a non muslim woman to appear in the street of Jidda (or any other city in Saudi Arabia) without covering her hair. Even though she might be dressed most modesty. The nation is not interested in the individuals background, or logic they just want you to respect what they believe in despite the fact that most of them do not even know why.
Objective knowledge is that which can not be contested or refuted, regardless of situation. Example: 1 + 1 = 2... this is objective knowledge, because any other meaning attributed to the statement would make it incorrect. Many philosophers throughout time have tried to find the basis for a set of completely objective truths about life. Descartes; a French philosopher, mathematician, scientist, and writer. He has been dubbed the "Father of Modern Philosophy came close with "cogito ergo sum" (I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am) but was unable to go further. Life for the most part, at least for human beings, is a series of subjective moments, as much as we would like our truths to be objective.
The above definition clear indicates that there is a difference between relative and absolute truth whereby the relative truth is required to voted on by the majority of the people for example wearing seatbelt while driving may not be law for a given state up until the millennium and yet for anyone driving without the seatbelt since the year two-thousand in that state, one may have to pay a heavy penalty as a consequence for breaking the law. On the other hand lying is an absolute fact that will lead the person to darkness yet many people may argue that there is benefits in lying in some special occasions. To recognize the difference between objective thinking and just following your experience and culture one is required to be fairly knowledgeable at the very least. A gift such as objective thinking is sometimes innated it is such a distinct quality that you might say it is as rare as having good handwriting or the ability to sing. However in the write environment a person could be trained and developed to obtain at least part of such high characteristic quality. The minimum requirement are coming from a family background which has evidence of some intellectual and creative thinking members, able to listen well which enables the person to learn fast, seeking knowledge at all times, enjoying the companionship of friends that are very able members in society and many more qualities that must join together to prepare a person to gain the ability of becoming an objective thinker. Most unfortunately barriers such as the cultural restrictions provided by the state, and the fearful experience of most parents who would not wish for their children to swim against the waves of the society prevents individuals within the society to enter the field of distinguish thinkers. Furthermore materials such as wealth titles and other desires will create extra side track from the path of thinking freely and thinking full stop.
The above arguments leads us to the conclusion that understanding which is made of the individuals experience and cultural knowledge maybe useful, practical in many occasions. However it provides the society with no tools to change direction for the better. The task of creating such changes requires the honesty and the courage of the intellectuals of the society. The people who would know the difference between relative and the absolute values, which brings in mind an imagination of any given society in such a way that if the members of any state made a shape looking like a pyramid whereby the base has the largest space and is able to hold most people whilst the vertex at the top belongs only to the unique individuals in the universe (figure 1 demonstrate the statement). As shown the higher the pyramid gets, the higher the individual moves less people are there and extra quality is required. The conditions for going higher up the pyramid, higher level of intellect, ability to question ones beliefs, obtaining a massive courage and being honest about what they believe in. sadly the majority are at the base of the pyramid. Which are made of fanatics and the most ignorant members of society, that continuously accuse the individuals at the higher level of the pyramid for being hypocrite. What is most interesting as you clime higher up the pyramid the numbers shrink and eventually going down to one. That one is the individual that is not interested in the past culture or history. Such distinguished individual is able that he/she is capable of writing the history of tomorrow, To recognize them better great Prophets and many philosophers are amongst these unique individuals of their own time who came yesterday and we are exercising their philosophy today.
